What is a racist incident?

Recommendation 12 of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report states that the definition of a racist incident should be: ”any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or by any other person”

  • Racial harassment of any kind is a crime and can include:
  • Verbal abuse and threatening behaviour.
  • Criminal damage such as racist graffiti or broken windows.
  • Assaults
  • Harassment (behaviour that causes the victim alarm or distress)
  • Any activity which aims to deter a person from occupying a particular property
  • Sending a letter/article containing
  • indecent or grossly offensive messages or threats
  • Threatening and abusive telephone calls
  • Arson
